We are excited to offer this exceptional 1983 Rolex Submariner Ref. 16800: a rare and highly sought-after example of Rolex’s transitional models. Released in 1979, the Ref. 16800 marked a significant evolution from the earlier Ref. 1680, blending the vintage Submariner aesthetics that collectors love with modern technical advancements that paved the way for today’s Submariner line.
The Ref. 16800 also introduced several key upgrades to the Submariner platform. The movement was upgraded from the Caliber 1575 to the Caliber 3035, allowing for the addition of the quick-set date function—a feature that significantly enhanced convenience by making it easier to set the date. Additionally, the movement’s frequency was increased from 19,800vph to 28,800vph, resulting in better accuracy. The watch’s dive rating was also improved, increasing from 200 meters to 300 meters (1,000 feet), making this a more robust and capable timepiece for divers. The sapphire crystal further enhanced durability, replacing the previous plexiglass crystal found on earlier models.
In terms of design, the Ref. 16800 retained much of the overall aesthetic of the Ref. 1680, including the traditional Cyclops magnifying lens over the date. However, it introduced a critical change to the bezel, which switched from the bi-directional movement of the earlier models to a unidirectional bezel, improving safety and accuracy during dives.
One of the standout features of this particular example is its matte dial, a variation that was only produced in the early 1980s. This rare dial features a well-aged matte black finish paired with tritium lume plots, which have developed a desirable creamy patina over time. The dial & hands remains in original untouched condition with consistent ageing. The tritium pearl on the bezel has aged beautifully, matching the patina of the dial and hands. The period-correct G Series (1982) Rolex Oyster 93150 bracelet, complete with correct 593 end-links remains in raw untouched condition with minimal stretch, retaining its original finish and character.
Complete with its original warranty certificate dated 22 Feb 1983 along with its boxes & accessories, this Submariner Ref. 16800 represents a rare opportunity to own one of the last truly vintage Submariners!
