The Patek Philippe Nautilus 3710 introduced in 1998 is often regarded as one of the more thoughtfully executed neo-vintage references within the collection. Its introduction of a power reserve complication marked an important technical progression for the Nautilus, yet it was implemented with restraint, preserving the model’s original visual balance. Of particular note to purists is the return to the larger, early-style “Jumbo”case proportions.
While the case architecture remains faithful to the established Nautilus form, it is the dial of the 3710 that defines its identity. Departing decisively from the familiar gradient blue “teak deck” aesthetic, the matte black dial introduces a quieter, more restrained character that feels distinctly neo-vintage. This subdued backdrop allows the white gold Roman numerals, fine railroad minute track, and power reserve indication to stand out with measured confidence rather than excess. The result is a dial that feels calmer, more balanced and intentionally different from its predecessor.
The 3710 is affectionately known among collectors as the “Comet,” a nickname derived from its distinctive power reserve execution—an element unique to this reference within the Patek Philippe catalogue. Rather than a static indicator, both the reserve hand and its scale rotate together within the sub-dial, creating a smooth, clockwise motion when the watch is wound. The effect is quietly mesmerizing, resembling a comet in orbit, and introduces a sense of animation rarely seen in an early Nautilus ☄️
The case of the Nautilus 3710 remains resolutely faithful to Gérald Genta’s original design language, preserving the essential proportions and architecture that define the early Nautilus lineage. Measuring approximately 42mm across and an exceptionally slim 8.1mm in thickness, it occupies a sweet spot between generations—slightly more compact than modern references, yet offering more presence than the original 3700. This transitional sizing gives the watch a distinctly balanced wrist profile that many collectors find ideal.
Beneath the solid caseback sits the calibre 330 SC, a 45hrs power reserve movement chosen less for spectacle than for purpose. It is an automatic calibre built with durability in mind, featuring shock protection and a self-compensating balance that reinforces the Nautilus’ original brief as a true sports watch. There is a quiet confidence in knowing the movement is finished to Geneva Seal standards, yet intentionally hidden from view. While a display back might satisfy curiosity, the closed, monobloc construction feels more honest to Genta’s original intent, prioritising integrity, water resistance, and structural coherence over exhibition.
The integrated bracelet is equally noteworthy, with excellent articulation that allows it to fall naturally and almost vertically from the case, avoiding the outward flare seen on contemporary iterations. Constructed around a true monobloc case design and rated to 120 metres of water resistance, the 3710 retains a genuine utilitarian credibility beneath its refined exterior. Finishing throughout the case and bracelet is exemplary, with crisp brushing and restrained polished accents executed with precision. Together, these details reinforce the 3710’s standing as one of the most cohesively designed neo-vintage Nautilus references—engineered with intent, proportion, and long-term wearability firmly in mind.
Worn on the wrist, the Nautilus 3710 feels less like an object to be admired and more like one to be lived with. Its proportions register immediately as correct, the case and bracelet moving in unison and settling low without drama. In softer light, the matte black dial recedes, allowing the Roman numerals and power reserve to emerge only when the angle invites them. There is an ease to the way it wears, a sense that nothing has been forced or exaggerated. It is the kind of watch that reveals its appeal gradually, rewarding time spent rather than attention sought
Accompanying the watch is an exceptionally complete set, preserved with the level of care one would hope to see at this point in the model’s life cycle. The ensemble includes its original warranty papers, service documentation, and archival materials, offering a clear and well-documented provenance. Notably, the original point-of-sale date of 14 December 2005 places this example among the final production period of the reference, adding an extra layer of relevance for collectors who value end-of-run pieces. Together, the completeness of the set and the late production timing reinforce the watch’s standing not just as an individual object, but as a thoughtfully preserved chapter in the Nautilus story
