This 1978 5513 example features a "pre-COMEX" dial, typical of Submariners with case serial numbers in the five million range from the late 1970s.
The dial displays characteristics similar to those of the ref. 5514 COMEX Submariner dials, including a coronet with a somewhat smudgy and thick appearance, a distinctive "L" in "ROLEX" with pronounced upper serifs, and an "=" sign slightly to the left of the "A" in "SUBMARINER." These traits are unique to this specific range of "pre-COMEX" Submariners.
In addition to its distinctive "pre-COMEX" dial, this vintage Submariner excels in both its physical presence and wrist appeal. It is one of the finest examples we've had in recent times. The creamy patina on the lume enhances its enduring charm, with the hands, hour markers, and bezel pip showcasing a pleasing custard-like hue. The bezel insert has gracefully aged to a dark grey, perfectly complementing the matte black dial and the attractive patina.
